Alfagrog – The Perfect Low-Cost Bio medium for Fish Pond filters

When a pond filter is combined with a UVC (ultraviolet clarifier) in a fish pond, the result is clean, clear, and healthy water where fish can grow to their full potential. Using Alfagrog pond filter media in your biofilter ensures efficient biological filtration, while the UVC eliminates suspended algae that cause green or murky water.

The filter handles biological purification by removing harmful toxins, and the UVC clarifies the water by destroying free-floating algae. Together, they create a balanced and healthy pond ecosystem.

Why Alfagrog Pond Filter Media Is So Effective

The key to successful pond filtration is having enough high-quality biomedia inside the biofilter to support large colonies of beneficial bacteria. These bacteria convert toxic waste products into safer compounds, keeping pond water safe for fish.

Many pond filters use plastic tubes, balls, or coils as biomedia. However, plastic media has a smooth surface and a relatively low specific surface area (SSA), meaning large volumes are needed to support sufficient bacteria. As pond size increases, the filter box must become much larger — and more expensive.

By contrast, 1 liter of Alfagrog (±500 g) can biologically filter 1,000 liters of pond water under normal stocking levels. For heavily stocked ponds, simply increase the dosage to 2 liters per 1,000 liters.

Cost and Space Savings with Alfagrog Biomedia

One of the biggest advantages of Alfagrog is its efficiency. Made from fused ceramic, Alfagrog contains thousands of microscopic pores, creating an exceptionally high specific surface area. This allows massive bacterial colonies to grow in a much smaller space.

In practical terms:

  • 1 liter of Alfagrog = up to 40 liters of plastic biomedia

  • Smaller filter box required

  • Lower overall filtration system cost

  • Ideal for both small and large ponds

Alfagrog was originally developed in the UK for commercial aquaculture, where reliable, high-performance filtration is essential.

Alfagrog Pack Sizes Available

We offer Alfagrog pond filter media in the following sizes:

  • 5 Liters

  • 10 Liters

  • 15 Liters

  • 20 Liters

  • 25 Liters

Alfagrog can also be mixed with existing filter media (such as plastic tubes or balls) to boost filtration capacity, making it ideal for growing fish or increasing stocking density.

Specific Surface Area Comparison (SSA)

A higher SSA means more space for beneficial bacteria to grow:

  • Alfagrog: 45–100 m² per liter (depending on particle size)

  • Ceramic Rings: 8 m² per liter

  • Lava Rock: 8 m² per liter

  • Plastic Foam: 2.5 m² per liter

  • Plastic Coils: 1 m² per liter

Simply put, Alfagrog provides vastly superior biological filtration performance per liter compared to traditional pond filter media.
