GRASS CARP

History

Grass Carp are native to China, occurring naturally in large rivers flowing into the Pacific Ocean. Some reports suggest they can live up to 50 years.
They were introduced to Southern Africa from Malaysia in 1967 and Germany in 1975, primarily for aquatic weed control. Stocking took place through the Umgeni Hatchery into farm dams in KwaZulu-Natal and Mpumalanga. The species was later introduced into Mozambique via Cuba.

Distribution and Habitat

In South Africa, Grass Carp are found in areas such as the Umgeni River above Nagle Dam, farm dams in KwaZulu-Natal, and Victoria Lake (Germiston). They prefer slow-flowing rivers or still water with abundant vegetation.
They tolerate a wide temperature range (0°C – 38°C) and feed mainly on aquatic plants, although insects and other invertebrates are also consumed. Breeding occurs in flowing rivers during flood conditions, with eggs and larvae drifting in the water.

Cab Koi Fisheries proudly supplies responsibly sourced pond fish for sale, including specialist species like Grass Carp.
